When we attempt to
control a person or situation, we are saying by our actions, “God, you are not
big enough to take care of this. I will handle this one on my own.” We don’t
see the results we want fast enough so we take matters into our own hands. We
think that we can do a better job than God.
The root of control is
insecurity. We feel out of control.
The truth of the matter is that sometimes our lives are out of our control. It is hard for us to accept that concept. We
think we have the right to always have control of our lives.
The problem with our
knee-jerk reaction to feeling out of control is that it reflects our lack of
faith in God in that area. When we take the reins when God is supposed to be
holding them, we are essentially trying to do God’s job.
When
I’m trying to control, God takes His hands off the steering wheel. He will not
fight us for control. If we want to try to do things ourselves when He is
supposed to be doing them, He will let us crash.
The absolutely amazing
thing is that, after we botch the job, He will help us put the pieces back
together. He will not walk away from the scene of the accident, saying, “You should
have known better.”
No, He hopes that
maybe we will learn from our obstinate behavior and acknowledge that our way
didn’t work out so well. He hopes that we will give up and let Him direct our
lives. Then…no more crashes, just a smooth, peaceful ride. A much better
alternative.
