Yesterday we took our first Hebrew lesson, taught by a delightful lady and interesting teacher. Unfortunately, the level of most of the students was far past ours, so we did not learn a lot of useful words and phrases to help us shop and interact with people. We will meet with her again, at a time when she teaches beginning Hebrew.

Our Hebrew instructor lived with Eliezer Ben Yehuda's daughter for a while. The two of them studied Arabic together. In 2009 I read a biography of Ben Yehuda and became mildly fascinated with his life. He is the father of modern Hebrew and he devoted his entire life to creating it. He was opposed and persecuted by many, even Jews, who at the time could not envision the necessity of a common language between them. I hope our instructor will share some of her experiences with us in the future.
