December 25th

.
Christmas Eve was quiet; we spent it with Bill's mom, Bea. Michelle and her friend Amanda joined us for Christmas brunch. I got a picture of Michelle tasting raw milk for the first time. She liked it! Mom and Dad came over this afternoon. As I write, Bill and Dad are playing a game of chess. It is usually a quiet time, except for occasional bursts of excitement when a particularly good or bad move is made.

Thursday night Pastor Urshan relayed to us how his family used to visit Bethlehem every year during the Christmas season. He was born in Jerusalem and Bethlehem was a short six mile walk or donkey ride away. He said that around Christmastime he gets homesick for "the old country." It must have been quite meaningful to live so close to the place where Jesus was born, for at 80+ years old, he still speaks of Bethlehem with longing in his voice. He says that 2,000 years ago, Bethlehem was not a large or popular town. Yet something incredibly significant occurred there that forever changed its status. The birth of a baby, unnoticed by most, is now heralded by millions. Bethlehem..."House of Bread." Your name is significant and fitting, for from you, Bethlehem, came the Bread of Life, which has nourished and sustained many. For that, we are grateful.
