From Coast to Coast

Within six hours, we saw both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. After a 40 minute ride on a rattle trap plane from Fresno, we took a redeye flight on a Boeing 757 from San Francisco to Boston. We had the unique experience of traveling with a dog. Not our dog. But there we were, seated in row 27, and we heard whimpering behind us. Surely this is the sound of a baby or child, I thought. Unfortunately not.

What I want to know is, when did airlines begin allowing people to bring their dogs with them? And why? The lady who owned this particular dog sitting under Bill's seat during our flight did not appear blind, emotionally unstable (although, these days, you never know), or otherwise impaired. So I assume she brought her dog along just because she likes it, not because she needs it for any particular reason.

Just how far will this go? Can you imagine traveling in a plane with 20 dogs? It would sound like a kennel. Obviously, nearby passengers were not asked beforehand if they had an aversion to animals or if they were allergic to animal hair. No, the owner pays and the dog gets to ride.

What a strange world we live in. These days, pets are oftentimes treated better, with more respect, than most humans. Doesn't this say something unusual about our "modern" society?

But, this morning, we are in the Mathias' lovely home on quiet Cape Cod, enjoying the morning fog. The quiet on this gray day is wonderfully therapeutic.

Today, Bill will accompany Pastor Mathis, who is a carpenter and cabinet maker, to the job site. It will be a little deviation from his normal routine of study, preparation, and preaching.

From CA to MA...two coasts, two starkly different cultures. With such incredible diversity, America is an amazing place. It really is a great place to live...dogs and all.
